The Recipe for Business Success: Personality, Personality, Personality

For a number of years, employers would predominantly focus on the functionality of their employees.

The Recipe for Business Success: Personality, Personality, Personality

They evaluated how much work an individual could process within a certain timeframe. If the individual worked quickly and effectively, perfect. If not, they’re probably not right for the business.

Fast forward to now and the focus has shifted from simply looking at functionality to instead examining how a mix of different personalities can boost the overall productivity and creativity of a business.

And speaking of creativity, employers are increasingly turning to creative methods to characterise employees, particularly when it comes to the recruitment process. A high profile example of this comes from the chief executive officer of US investment business Charles Schwab, Walt Bettinger, who revealed that one of his methods for finding the right candidate is to arrive for a breakfast interview early and ask the restaurant managers to purposely make a mistake with the candidate’s order. Bettinger claims this tactic allows him to see how the potential hire reacts to conflict and adversity.

Luckily for you, there’s no need to go to such theatrical lengths to gain an insight into the personality traits of a potential employee, as there is an array of accessible, tried and tested personality tests. Here, we take a look at just some of the most popular assessments for businesses:

Clifton StrengthsFinder

This web-based assessment by Gallup helps to identify the areas where you have the greatest potential for increasing your productivity, performance and engagement, which can be applied in both business and life. It works by measuring recurring patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour. Although StengthsFinder isn’t technically supposed to be used in hiring decisions, analysing your existing team’s areas of strength can make a good hire easier to identify.

Colour Coding

This is a really popular method of assessment, used by HR professionals across the globe. Colour coding works by looking at how you do things and when you do them. The result will see you placed into one of four colour groups that are based on base motivations.

Plum Problem Solving Test

Billed as “Moneyball for hiring”, the Plum Problem Solving Test turns to science to evaluate candidates in areas that are not traditionally covered in a CV, such as task management, conflict resolution, teamwork and communication.

Harrison Assessments

This online assessment tool delivers methodologies to help businesses identify and hire the best candidate for the job. The best part is that its tools are customisable to specific business needs and job requirements to ensure the assessment process is more accurate. And did we mention that we offer this assessment solution to clients?

With more and more personality assessments and testing methods emerging on a seemingly daily basis, it’s clear this recruitment tool is only going to evolve and become more focused in the future, ensuring businesses thrive with the right mix of people.
